چکیده

A pilot experiment was carried out to define a method for oestrus detection for grouphoused sows based on sows' acceleration measurements. Acceleration data was measured for five sows, in three dimensions, four times per second during twenty days. The oestrus detection method is based on hourly averages of acceleration measurements, modeled using a univariate Dynamic Linear Model combined with a Kalman Filter. Alarms are produced when the observations deviate too widely from the model's estimated level. The same deviation patterns are observed for two sows out of three sows that came into oestrus. The data collection and the detection method are discussed and perspectives for improving the detection model while scaling up this pilot experiment are presented.

Automated Monitoring Methods For Group Housed Sows

This paper reviews the current automation methods of oestrus detection in group housed sows and points out their limitations. Results from non-automated methods are also presented, in an effort to draw conclusions to assist in the development of new automatic methods. Automatic measurement of physical traits, e.g. body temperature, collect non-specific information but may be combined with activ...

Automatic detection of oestrus and health disorders using data from electronic sow feeders

This article suggests a method for detecting oestrus, lameness and other health disorders for group housed sows fed by electronic sow feeders (ESF). The detection method is based on the measure of the individual eating rank, modeled using a univariate Dynamic Linear Model. Differences between the predicted values of the model and the observations are monitored using a control chart: a V-mask is...

Classifying Sows’ Activity Types from Acceleration Patterns. An Application of the Multi-Process Kalman Filter

An automated method of classifying sow activity using acceleration measurements would allow the individual sow’s behavior to be monitored throughout the reproductive cycle; applications for detecting behaviors characteristic of estrus and farrowing or to monitor illness and welfare can be foreseen. This article suggests a method of classifying five types of activity exhibited by group-housed so...

Classification of Sows’ Activity Types from Acceleration Patterns using Univariate and Multivariate Models

Automatic monitoring of animal behaviour in livestock production opens up possibilities for on-line monitoring of, among others, oestrus, health disorders, and animal welfare in general. The aim of this study is to use time series of acceleration measurements in order to automatically classify activity types performed by group-housed sows. Extracts of series collected for 11 sows are associated...

A 25 years experience of group-housed sows–reproduction in animal welfare-friendly systems

Since January 1 2013, group housing of sows has been compulsory within the European Union (EU) in all pig holdings with more than ten sows. Sows and gilts need to be kept in groups from 4 weeks after service to 1 week before the expected time of farrowing (Article 3(4) of Directive 2008/120/EC on the protection of pigs). The legislation regarding group housing was adopted already in 2001 and a ...
